Community Reintegration

Our projects aim to address issues that challenge reintegration especially social stigma arising from negative attitudes and stereotypes towards former inmates and the reduce discriminating towards these individuals.

 

As part of its resilience in the ELOI invites CSOs registered of the interest to develop and conduct community projects to support reintegration of prisoners back into society. The program is broadly targeted towards communities, however, Concept notes sometimes include specific target audiences depending on the interventions and activities.

Holistic Approach

  • ELOIs reintegration and after care programs for violent individuals forms part of a more comprehensive approach to preventing crime and countering violent individuals.
  • Our reintegration comprises also of a multidisciplinary approach with coordination of the different stakeholders involved.

General features of our reintegration programs

  • ELOIM reintegration programs starts from the point of detention, and the whole period of detention to reinforce our aims.
  • We aim at change the cognitive, behavioral and attitudinal characteristics of the inmate. To this end critical thinking and problem solving skills are effective tools in restoring propaganda of possible recruiters. Religious counseling is also of value, both for the inmate and the family. Strengthening education and employment opportunities through basic courses and vocational training is also of fundamental importance. We at ELOI emphasis this.
  • Counseling forms part of a more general program to monitor and evaluate changes in the attitude, behavior and environment of the offender.

Scope

  • Capacity building of families and communities through sustainable interventions.
  • Activities promoting and supporting bridging prisoners or drug dependent persons with their families and communities.
  • Programs for employers to create employment opportunities and training, and assist in providing gainful employment for those leaving prison or rehabilitation centers

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • We continuously assess and evaluate our programs/projects.
  • We have an external independent and knowledgeable evaluator.
  • The acceptance of the program to the beneficiary is a main indicator of potential.
  • In some cases, monitoring continues for an extended period after release and may involve religious and psychological counseling sessions for both the beneficiaries and their families. Our regular reviews help us decide if the monitoring needs extending or if the beneficiary is completely free. However the engagement and the assistance of the program may continue until she or he can be independent.
