From poverty and gender inequality to the lack of infrastructure, the challenges are vast, but the solutions are within reach.
At ELOI Ministries, we believe that education is a right, not a privilege. Our mission is to empower every child in Uganda with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive. But what makes education so vital, and how can we collectively ensure that every child has access to this fundamental right?
The Barriers to Education in Uganda
- Poverty and Access
Over 40% of Uganda’s population lives below the poverty line, and many families cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or supplies. For children in rural areas, schools are often located miles away, making daily attendance a near impossibility. - Gender Inequality
Girls face unique challenges in accessing education. Early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and cultural norms often force them to drop out of school. According to UNICEF, only 54% of girls in Uganda complete primary school, and even fewer transition to secondary education. - Inadequate Infrastructure
Many schools lack basic necessities such as classrooms, desks, and teaching materials. In rural areas, children are often taught under trees with no protection from harsh weather. - Teacher Shortages
With a student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 54:1, Uganda faces a severe shortage of trained educators. This impacts the quality of education and the ability of students to receive the individual attention they need.
